The town and monastery of 14th century named after famous saint Sergiy Radonezhskiy today has become a kind of Russian Vatican. The Troitse-Sergiev monastery accommodates a seminary, a museum of history and treasures many famous icons, monuments of antiquity and a huge library of religious literature.
The oldest building here - Trinity (Troitsky) Cathedral built in 1422 - is well known not only for its architecture, but for the marvelous collection of paintings as well. The great Russian artist Andrey Rublov worked here for a long time. In the History of Art Museum you can see the collections of the Old Russian paintings. In Riznitsa Museum you can see the church household articles and clerical dresses embroidered with precious stones and golden threads.
A whole-day excursion to Sergiev Posad features a tour round the town, Troitse-Sergievskaya Lavra, Lavra treasury - Riznitsa, and lunch in the restaurant Russkiy Dvorik in a Russian style.
