The Grand Palace of Peterhof is located 19 miles to the west of St. Petersburg on the coast of the Gulf of Finland across from Peter's fortress island of Kronstadt. Peter the Great had an idea of creating a summer residence, following the model of French Versailles with fountains, palaces, pavilions and parks. The first palace was built by the order of Peter the Great around 1707. During the reign of Catherine the Great many palace interiors were redone in the style of classicism.
