| | | | | | | | | Pskov-Pechory Holy Dormition Monastery is one of Russia’s oldest cloisters with a cave necropolis. The monastery, initially placed in the caves (the Old Russian ‘pechora’ means ‘cave’), provided name for the town of Pechory, located 50 km away from Pskov on the border with Estonia.
 
The image of this monastery, founded in 1473, is fabulous and absolutely unique. The monastery is situated in a most scenic valley of sinkhole sand caverns, and is a large spiritual and cultural center, and one of the country’s largest monasteries with centuries of uninterrupted history and a remarkable historical structure ensemble of the 16th-19th centuries.
Today the monastery is comprised of 11 temples, and 3 of them are cave-based. Unusually picturesque is the architectural ensemble of the monastery, including temples of the 15th-20th centuries, utility structures and a large bell loft with a set of old bells preserved of old.
