| | | | | | | Excursion to Pushkinskiye Gori
| | | | | | | | | Pushkinskiye Gory is located 120 km south-east of Pskov in the very heart of the Pskov Land close to the St. Petersburg-Kiev highway. This place used to be called Svyatiye Gory (Holy Hills). The name of the local Svyatogorsky Monastery, founded in 1569, was derived from it.

Throughout his life A. Pushkin carried a passionate affection to this beauty spot of the Russian land. This is where he spent two years of his exile (1824-1826). Here, ‘yet closer to the loved abode’, he willed to be buried. Here Pushkin wrote over a hundred of works of art.
The main attraction center of the Pushkin Preserve is Mikhailovskoye – the former family estate of the Hannibals-Pushkins. In 1742, by decree of Empress Elisabeth, the Mikhailovskaya firth was gifted to Abraham Hannibal – ‘the moor of Peter the Great’. Thus, Pushkin’s forefathers first came to this land. The estate with the manor and utilities is located on a hill, above the river Sorot. From south, the estate is adjoined by a park then changing to a pinewood; off the hill slope there is a picturesque view of the river Sorot and a vast valley with the Kuchane Lake, with the Petrovsky Park beyond it.
The Pushkin Preserve includes Trigorskoye – the former estate of the closest neighbors and friends of Pushkin’s – the Osipovs-Wolfs. Trigorskoye is located about 3 km west of Mikhailovskoye, upon one of the three hills, from which the place borrowed its name. The way up there lies by the Malenets Lake surrounded by a forest. The Trigorsky Park is a wonderful example of gardening art of the late 18th century.
A magnificent monument to the early history of these Pushkin-associated places is Petrovskoye located on the Kuchane shoreline 4 km north-east of Mikhailovskoye. Currently, the house of the Hannibals is fully restored, and it hosts an exhibition telling of Alexander Pushkin’s forefathers – the Hannibals.
